Bart Brentjens: I felt the atmosphere of the Olympic Games
(Beijing, September 22) The men's cross-country race of the "Good Luck Beijing" 2007 International Mountain Bike Invitational Competition concluded at the Laoshan Mountain Bike Course this afternoon. Bart Brentjens of the Netherlands came out second with 2:14:06. After the competition he gave an interview to the media.
Bart Brentjens said that he was satisfied with the course. "The course is not very long in each lap and requires both techniques and strength. I felt great during the competition."
In today's race many riders bowed out halfway for trailing the leaders for a whole lap. Only eight riders finished the competition. Commenting on this, Bart Brentjens said one reason was that many riders were tired due to recent competitions such as the World Cup series and World Championships. Another reason was that some riders had not finished the whole course as there would be no points awarded this time for their world rankings. They might just want to get some feelings running on this course for next year's Olympic Games, he added.
Talking about mountain bike in his country, Bart Brentjens said, "Cycling is very popular in the Netherlands and the bikes can be seen everywhere. People go to school or go shopping by bike. I also wish we could promote environment protection through this sport."
Bart Brentjens also spoke highly of the organization of the event. "The event organizing committee and the volunteers have offered excellent services. I have felt the atmosphere of the Olympic Games here already."
