Chinese Liu Ying claims the women's title

(Beijing, September 22) The "Good Luck Beijing" 2007 International Mountain Bike Invitational Competition opened today at the Laoshan Mountain Bike Course with the participation of over 20 cyclists from 16 countries and regions including Germany, the United States and host China. After seven laps of fierce competition in the women's individual cross-country event, China's Liu Ying emerged victorious to claim the title.
The women's cross-country race began at 11:00 a.m. with China's Liu Ying, Wang Jingjing and Ren Chengyuan starting in the front group according to their world rankings, followed by other Chinese cyclists from Zhejiang, Shandong and Yunnan provinces.
After the first lap Liu Ying and Wang Jingjing led the group, while Ren Chengyuan placed 12th. For the following laps Liu maintained her leading position, followed by Wang Jingjing and German rider Sabine Spitz alternately. In the last but one lap, both Sabine Spitz and Lene Byberg of Norway surpassed Wang Jinging to place second and third, leaving Wang Jingjing at the fourth place.
At the beginning of the final lap, Liu Ying was 1.5 minutes ahead of her Geman rival Sabine Spitz, who was merely 10 seconds faster than Norwegian Lene Byberg.
In the end, Liu Ying captured the gold medal with vast superiority.
